In the GPS Vehicle Tracking world, there are two general categories of systems from which to choose, "Active" (also known as Real Time) and "Passive".
Active systems utilize wireless networks that allow you to receive data from all of the vehicles in your fleet and view the location of any or all of your vehicles in near “real-time”. Real Time GPS tracking is fast becoming the standard for companies or individuals who wish to monitor vehicles as well as tracking assets (trailers, generators, heavy equipment). These systems are cost-effective, easy to use, and are virtually maintenance free since most are used over the internet and require no installation of software on your PC.
Passive units are installed in a vehicle or carried on a person, and the data on the device is manually downloaded from the vehicle at the end of the day, or when the vehicle or person returns to the home base. Passive systems are useful for those who do not wish to view any information in real time, and who do not wish to be immediately alerted of unusual or undesired activity during the day or throughout the night.
Unusual activity would vehicle actions such as excessive speed, entering or exiting defined zones and locations, or movement of a vehicle during certain times such as nights and weekends, which might indicate theft of a vehicle. |
