  What is GPS?

The Global Positioning System, or GPS consists of 30 specialized satellites that orbit the globe at over 10,000 miles above the Earth’s surface continuously transmitting information towards the earth. This information can be "detected" by GPS receivers. A GPS receiver, combined with a small computer, can calculate it's lat/long (latitude and Longitude). The current GPS system is accurate to within about a meter.

Although the GPS system was deployed in the 1970s exclusively for military use, today GPS receivers are used by millions of people of private citizens around the globe for business and recreation. One of the most common commercial uses of GPS is Vehicle Location.

In this application, a GPS receiver is installed into a vehicle where it constantly monitors the GPS information being sent from the satellites. The GPS unit continually stores new information coming from the GPS satellites so that someone, usually in a home office, can monitor in real-time, the location of the vehicle. GPS systems also include built-in clocks so that the system can calculate additional information such as how far a vehicle has traveled, how long it has been moving, when it started, when it stopped, and how fast the vehicle is moving at any particular time. This information can be stored indefinitely on a computer, so that a history of a vehicles movements is easily accessible.

What is the difference between Real Time and Passive?

In the GPS Vehicle Tracking world, there are two general categories of systems from which to choose, "Active" (also known as Real Time) and "Passive".

Active systems utilize wireless networks that allow you to receive data from all of the vehicles in your fleet and view the location of any or all of your vehicles in near “real-time”. Real Time GPS tracking is fast becoming the standard for companies or individuals who wish to monitor vehicles as well as tracking assets (trailers, generators, heavy equipment). These systems are cost-effective, easy to use, and are virtually maintenance free since most are used over the internet and require no installation of software on your PC.

Passive units are installed in a vehicle or carried on a person, and the data on the device is manually downloaded from the vehicle at the end of the day, or when the vehicle or person returns to the home base. Passive systems are useful for those who do not wish to view any information in real time, and who do not wish to be immediately alerted of unusual or undesired activity during the day or throughout the night.

Unusual activity would vehicle actions such as excessive speed, entering or exiting defined zones and locations, or movement of a vehicle during certain times such as nights and weekends, which might indicate theft of a vehicle.

Can the SafeTeen system be installed covertly in a vehicle?

The SafeTeen system is installed behind the car stereo. All cables and wires are hidden from view. No one will know the SafeTeen system is installed in a vehicle unless they are told.

Most SafeTeen customers choose to tell their teen drivers about the system. Much of the benefit of the SafeTeen system is in the knowledge that the system is in the vehicle and that all driving information is being monitored. SafeTeen influences drivers into making better decisions, but the driver needs to know about the system in order to be influenced.

Can I move it from one car to another?
Many SafeTeen customers move the system from one vehicle to another as driver gets older and a younger brother and sister begins driving. The installation of the SafeTeen system is similar to installing a car stereo. It can be removed from one vehicle and installed into another. Professional SafeTeen installers all available all over the country. They can come to your home or business to perform the installation at a convenient time.

Do I need to install any software on my computer?
The SafeTeen system is a 100% web-based system so you do not need to install any software on you computer. You can log in to your account from any internet computer anywhere in the world.

Can my teen just turn the SafeTeen system off when they don't want me to know what is going on?

The SafeTeen system is installed behind the car Stereo system and is powered by the same wire that powers the car stereo. Although the system is easy to install (about 30 minutes), it would take far too much time to disable it each time your teen wanted to travel discreetly.

Also, the SafeTeen system sends vehicle to your account on the SafeTeen servers every five minutes that the vehicle is in motion. This data is stored for 90 days. If a SafeTeen system is disabled it is apparent when reviewing the vehicle data reports.

What if my teen just rides with someone else? Won't that defeat the SafeTeen system?
SafeTeen system alerts can be sent when your teens car DOES NOT move, the same as if the vehicle DOES move. If you know that your teen is supposed to be driving home from school or leaving work at a particular time and the vehicle does not move at that time, SafeTeen can send an alert to your phone or pager.
